It was all cheers and spirit that kicked off the Edgewood Commission meeting before officials got down to business.
The Commission began their regular meeting on Feb. 27 by recognizing the South Mountain cheer team for taking first place at the Spirit Xpress West Competition by presenting them with a certificate of achievement.
They congratulated the young cheerleaders and wished them luck in their future competitions.
Voting vs. Guns
Town Manager Nina McCracken told the commission that Santa Fe County Clerk Katharine Clark showed up to discuss the memorandum of understanding between Edgewood and the Santa Fe County Clerk’s office regarding the use of the town’s administration building to hold the primary election.
“We are a little concerned that we might not have a polling site down here for early voting,” Clark said. “Your constituents very much like to vote in this location and our other location is not ADA compliant. I know that there’s some heartburn over the no open carry that’s sitting on the governor’s desk. I don’t know if she’s going to sign it. So we are hoping to be able to make sure that we can come to some kind of agreement about having voting at this location.”
Clark said it is challenging to find an a different early-voting location in Edgewood that is open and convenient for everyone while also being ADA-compliant. Commissioner Jerry Powers asked Clark if she had communicated with the school district about using a school building for the location, but Clark explained the school district can refuse the use of their buildings for early voting.
“There is some concern over [political] violence, that is one of the reasons they passed the law that school should be out on election day because there was so much pushback from the schools on potential violence at polling sites,” she said.
Town commissioners and Clark discussed the different buildings that could be used for the election but because of issues regarding ADA and population occupancy guidelines and no decision was made.
25th Celebration
Town commissioners then approved an alcohol special use permit for Juno Brewery to serve at the Town of Edgewood’s 25-year celebration on July 4.
Juno is a brewery, cafe and gallery that recently expanded into Edgewood and is located at 1913 U.S. Route 66. Juno’s other location is 1501 1st St., NW in Albuquerque.
“It is a great place for everyone to go to and just kick back, relax and enjoy,” said Mayor Ken Brennan.
