President Joe Biden was officially removed from the New Mexico ballot for the Nov. 5 general election before the Aug. 27 deadline, leaving Vice President Kamala Harris as the sole Democratic candidate.
President Biden who had secured victory in the state’s primary election in June, submitted the proper paperwork to have his name removed from the New Mexico General Election ballot. Harris and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota will be the Democratic candidates, according to Secretary of State’s Office spokesman Alex Curtas.
According to the Secretary of State, under state law, Biden’s victory in the state primary election in June only meant that Democratic voters had allocated delegates to the Democratic National Convention, where the formal nomination took place. After Biden withdrew from the race, he released his pledged delegates, allowing them to decide how to allocate their votes at the convention, along with the unpledged delegates.Recent polling in New Mexico, conducted earlier this month, shows support for Harris at 47%, while Republican Donald Trump has garnered 41%.
