Bernalillo County has launched its first speed cameras. However, none of the almost dozen cameras will be installed in the East Mountains.

The county’s camera program will go live Sept. 25 sending speeders a citation and the choice to pay either a $100 fine or a $25 fine along with four hours of community service.. Offenders will be required to join the BernCo Clean Team assisting with litter pickup, weed removal and community cleanup events.

This automated speed enforcement program follows an ordinance passed by the County Commissioners in February 2023.

“The number one complaint I have received from constituents living in my district is speeding,” says District 4 Commissioner Walt Benson. “This program is not intended to be a money generator, but rather to improve safety. I look forward to seeing the impact it has on all Bernalillo County roads.”

The camera locations were selected based on data from the Mid-Region Council of Governments, identifying the most hazardous road segments and intersections.

The cameras are installed in the following locations:

  • Paradise Boulevard, Eastbound and Westbound at Radcliffe Road
  • Isleta Boulevard, Northbound between Arenal Road and Montrose Place
  • Isleta Boulevard, Southbound between Sunbeam Road and Brother Road
  • Golf Course Road, Northbound and Southbound between Congress Avenue and Sutton Street
  • Bridge Road, Eastbound and Westbound between Old Coors Drive & Atrisco Drive
  • Arenal Road, Eastbound and Westbound between Isleta Boulevard and Tapia Boulevard

Cameras will also be installed at the locations below once final approval is received by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, who oversees these highways:

  • Coors Boulevard (NM 45), Northbound between Gun Club Road and Rio Bravo Boulevard
  • Coors Boulevard (NM 45), Northbound between Sage Road and Tower Road
