There are plans for a park in Tijeras that could almost fit in your pocket, at least that’s where the name for Pocket Park originated.
It’s a tiny space just 130 feet long and 100 feet wide, located near Camino Primera Agua behind the village water well. It was a small piece of land that the village well was sitting on, and residents wanted to turn it into a respite.
Tijeras Village Councilors approved the final design submitted by Albuquerque-based design firm MolzenCorbin at the June 17 council meeting.
MolzenCorbin will contract with Accent Landscaping for the landscape, irrigation, water feature and turf. The cost of the tiny park is about $270,000, and Village Clerk and Manager Audrey Caufield says that the village scraped together just enough to pay for it. “We’ve got $269,800, and that’s just enough to cover the cost with taxes,” she said. “Fingers crossed that doesn’t change.”
The Legislature ponied up $235,000 for the park project and village councilors put in the remaining $40,000.
The park will have decorative water features but doesn’t include a play area.
“It will have a walking path through the park, and will be beautifully landscaped,” Caufield said.
The park will have additional trees and eight parking spaces.
Now that the design is approved, councilors say they’d like to see it finished before Christmas. Construction hasn’t begun yet.
Pocket Park will be the second park for the village, the other is Luis Garcia Park next to the senior center.
