U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján joined other U.S. Senators in urging U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to maintain the U.S. Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force.

The task force aims to help protect election officials from threats and violence.

While the DOJ has not made a statement on the task force, the senators, all Democrats, wrote the letter in light of previous decisions made by Bondi.

“Given the recent disturbing personnel and policy decisions at the Department and the lack of transparency about the future of the Task Force, we request an immediate update on the status and activities of the Task Force, as well as what resources will be provided to ensure its important work continues so that election officials of both parties can safely administer our elections,” the letter states.

Alex Padilla of California and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration Dick Durbin led the letter.

New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver has been the focus of threats in the past, including some she said were prompted by a state legislator.

New Mexico passed a law in 2023 to make intimidation of election officials a fourth-degree felony.
